Getting to Lucca

Here's how to find Lucca, Italy, to meet Wanda Martinelli and take a walking tour.

Whether you are traveling by car, bus or train, here are some directions to help you find our favourite meeting location, Piazzale Verdi.

Driving

The town center of Lucca is only 1.5 kms away from the motorway exit Lucca Est (East) on the A11 Firenze (Florence)-Pisa Nord.

- After paying at the toll gate, you come to a huge roundabout. Take the second turn to the right - Viale Europa.
- Drive straight on at the traffic lights, over the railway bridge.
- You come to a smaller roundabout. The town wall is right in front of you. Drive straight on for another 300 meters.
- Enter the Santa Anna gate on the right and you are at Piazzale Verdi.

Use Google Maps to locate Piazzale Verdi.

Where to park near Piazzale Verdi

There are plenty of parking possibilities, both outside and inside the wall. Most of them are paying parking places.

The nearest gate to Piazzale Verdi is the Santa Anna gate. There are some parking spaces just outside the gate. Estimate the length of your stay and get your ticket from the machine. It must be shown on the windscreen (windshield).

Driving through the gate you end up at Piazzale Verdi where there are also some parking spaces. Again, get your ticket from the machine and show it in the windscreen.

Another opportunity is to drive to the right immediately after the gate, pass under a tunnel to find the entrance to a huge parking lot on the left side. In this case, you take the ticket at the barrier and pay at the machines before you drive away. Make sure not to loose your ticket!

By rail

The railway station (stazione in Italian) is south, just outside the town wall. As you leave the railway building, cross the ring road and walk to the left. The nearest gate is called San Pietro (Saint Peter).

Lucca is on the Firenze-Viareggio line and on the Pisa-Piazza al Serchio line. Train timetables can be found at www.trenitalia.it

By bus

The bus station is at Piazzale Verdi, on the western side, inside the town wall. Lucca is connected by bus to Florence, Pisa and the Pisa airport. The bus companies operating in the area are called Lazzi and Clap.

By plane

The nearest airport is Pisa Galileo Galilei, approx 25 kilometers away. The train station is just outside the terminal and there are direct trains to Lucca. There is also a direct bus connection operated by Lazzi.
